SSRI antidepressants are a mainstream treatment option for symptoms of depression. But often they do not work. As it turns out, depressive symptoms can be caused by a variety of physiological conditions that can be triggered by similar psychosocial stress factors such as jobs problems, divorce, and illness or death of a loved one. Often when SSRI antidepressants do not work, it is because the underlying problem is not low levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Instead, it is an imbalance in other neurotransmitters or adrenal hormones. Thus it is very important to do some testing before embarking on a treatment plan.
